A while back, a reader urged me to write about something called a “Zapper” that could supposedly cure AIDS, herpes, cancer and more. (The device in question purported to use electrical energy to annihilate these diseases, a claim those of us who write about science might call evidence-free.) In THE HONEST LOOK, an engaging 2010 novel that eloquently weaves together romantic and scientific story lines, there’s another Zapper — an experimental drug developed by a biotech firm hoping to cure Alzheimer’s. But that’s just one reason the novel entranced me. Its author, Jennifer L. Rohn, a real-life cell biologist, crafts characters and settings with a poetic prowess as insightful as the poetry her protagonist writes. Rohn unspools a suspenseful tale of biochemical mystery and of love longed for, discovered, compromised and maybe one day realized. At its essence is a prismatic exploration of honesty: when it matters, why it matters and how it relates to trust and truth.
